How long have you worked at i3Works?
I joined i3Works in July 2022, having been a Civil Servant working in project environments for three and a half years. After working for a large, government organisation, I was attracted to the more personable feel that i3Works embodies, as a small to medium enterprise. Despite being a rapidly growing company, i3Works’ size and structure enabled me to quickly build professional relationships across the business; at all levels of seniority.
How has i3Works supported you in gaining accredited qualifications?
At i3Works, learning opportunities and accredited qualifications are easily accessible. Continuous professional development is prioritised, and we are encouraged to achieve practitioner-level qualifications to ensure we are continually growing and providing the best possible support to our clients.
This financial year, I chose to undertake the Earned Value Management (EVM) Foundation and Practitioner qualifications, accredited by the Association for Project Management Group (APMG). Having previously worked for a government department, where funding and approvals are more difficult to obtain, I was pleasantly surprised by the speed at which I was able to access training materials and gain qualifications. Within my first five weeks at i3Works, I had already sat and successfully completed the Foundation examination.
When choosing the most appropriate qualification for me, my line manager and I reviewed the requirements of my current client role. EVM is a powerful tool for assessing project performance against the Performance Measurement Baseline (PMB) and having a deep understanding of this would undoubtedly increase the value I add to my client team.
How have you applied this knowledge with your client?
As a Consultant within the Project Controls Service Line, I am currently providing Planning and Scheduling expertise to Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S).
I am responsible for producing monthly Cost Performance Report (CPR) data using Primavera P6 and Unifier. With my newly established knowledge of EVM Systems, I am able to confidently support Control Account Managers (CAMs) in writing Variance Analysis Reports (VARs) by drilling into the data and finding the root cause of variances.
Interpreting CPR data and understanding which packages of work are underperforming is imperative to implementing corrective action in a timely manner.
What would you like to study for next?
Over the coming months, within my client role, I will be performing Schedule Risk Analysis (SRA) on several project schedules to inform the risked dates presented within business cases. I would therefore like to study for the Management of Risk (MoR) certifications to solidify my risk knowledge, and I know I’ll be supported by i3Works in doing so.
