Jason Gadd, Project Controls Consultant, joined i3Works in September 2022 after 29 years in the military. Here he shares his experience of identifying his transferable skills, scoping the job market and the warm welcome he received from the team.
I joined the Royal Navy in 1993 as an Operator Maintainer Electronic Warfare, qualified as a Physical Trainer serving as a new entry Instructor at HMS Raleigh before moving onto the Royal Marines. After completing an extremely arduous and challenging briefing and 6-month selection course, the majority of my career was spent within Military Intelligence, deploying operationally both in the UK and worldwide working closely with our foreign and coalition partners.
Leaving the military was an extremely big step, with a great deal of uncertainty and apprehension of what to do next, what qualifications to achieve and what field and potential employment to move into. During my career, whilst operating in challenging and sometimes hostile environments, in a wide range of mentoring and training roles and successfully achieving promotion based on performance and experience, I recognised that I potentially had a number of transferable skills that would be attractive to civilian employers. Further support during periods of resettlement highlighted the value of military personnel leaving service to a number of organisations.
After achieving project management qualifications and upon uploading my CV to several websites, I was contacted by a recruitment agency and reminded of my transferrable skills. They also made me aware of a number of suitable companies that would be interested in discussing future employment opportunities. At this point i3Works immediately raised their head above the parapet, due to their support of the Military Covenant in providing employment to service leavers. Through contact with ex-military personnel who had positions at i3Works, I instantly recognised that this was the organisation for me where I would be welcomed, supported and developed through a new challenging career.
I realised that, were I to be successful at interview, I would be immediately welcomed into a highly competitive professional organisation who conducted their business successfully within a number of sectors. This was an organisation that was committed to their corporate social responsibility, ensuring employees feel valued and part of the team by supporting and encouraging a healthy lifestyle both at work and at home.
Challenge accepted and all systems go, as they say. After only a brief period at i3Works I have already witnessed a tremendous team spirit through all channels and service lines and I am extremely grateful to have been given the opportunity to thrive within a new challenging environment. I have joined a new family, liaised with new clients and engaged with my new colleagues within a highly successful team and company. Onwards and upwards, as I look forward to a new career with amazing opportunities.
